The Board
We continued with our strategy to establish separate limited companies within the group, enabling and empowering these businesses to bring focus to their defined sectors and become the clients' contractor of choice! Although these are at different stages of evolution, we can already see the benefits of this revised group structure and will continue to help support their development through 2025 and beyond.
I would like to give recognition to the support teams that create the safe operating arena to allow these businesses to flourish. These are often our unsung heroes, SHEQ, IT development and support, Resources, Finance, Business Development/Marketing, HR, Procurement, XER Schedule Toolkit and the Administration teams without which there would be no Spencer. Thank you all.
We have continued to develop our staff career plans with the aim that everyone is properly supported through their personal development journey. It was fantastic to see this recognised by being judged the best place to work by Hull BID. We will seek to develop individual personal plan alignment with business/support team goals as we move through next year.
We have delivered a number of outstanding projects showcasing our engineering excellence across all our businesses during 2024 – some highlights of these are showcased in this newsletter. Our design capabilities and internal M&E capability continue to differentiate us from our competition and some of these have been credited at prestigious awards events as detailed in this newsletter. We have even been featured in national news for our work on Union Chain Bridge and had an appearance on 'Escape to the Country' at Menai Bridge!
We raised an incredible amount for our Charity of the Year, the Teenage Cancer Trust and we have never received so many donations from our sites and offices, clearly a reflection of the worthy cause, the efforts of our newly appointed Charity Champions and our incredibly generous staff. Well done everyone!
Our business development capability has been bolstered by sector specific leads focusing on building relationships with clients and identifying opportunities that align with our vision to deliver challenging projects across the businesses. The pipeline of secured work indicates a busy year ahead with solid growth anticipated in all sectors. We continue to invest in positioning the business and raising our profile in our chosen markets and are significantly increasing our resources in this area.
Thank you to everybody who took part in our suggestion scheme this year. The response each month has been amazing and although not everyone can be a winner, all suggestions have identified how we can improve our performance. I am pleased to confirm we have implemented some suggestions already and we will continue to embrace these into our future plans.
At the time of writing we are eager to discover our Spencer award winners for 2024. The volume of voting demonstrates the amount of talent and commitment amongst our employees and whether you are shortlisted or a winner I would like to thank you for all your exceptional efforts. It is nice to see the awards return as a regular event in our calendar.
We have faced challenges in the year, largely centred around the need to correctly administer contracts. This is an industry shift that we must respond to positively, helping inform our clients of impacts to their projects in order that they can manage expectations in their own organisations. Our values of exercising a proactive, transparent, and professional approach will be key to success. This will certainly be one of our focuses next year, ensuring we always comply with our contract requirements whilst also continuing to delight our clients.
In the New Year we will be setting out our detailed vision for 2025. This will link our action priorities necessary to achieve the aims of our annual business operating plans and will cover every aspect of our business.
Thanks again to all of you for your continued hard work and helping us to make Spencer a great place to work.
On behalf of the Board, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
