Torbay Footbridge

Back to home

We look back at one of our prestigious bridges, Torbay Footbridge, Torquay.

The contract involved the construction of an impounding cill and tide operated gates across the harbour entrance to ensure a depth of water is maintained at all states of the tide to prevent moored vessels from grounding. A 50m span double bascule lifting bridge – with landmark ‘blades of light’ towers, installed with feature lighting - providing a new pedestrian access across the harbour and created a natural promenade route for visitors. The project formed part of a £21 million regeneration of Torquay’s Waterfront.

Taking centre stage of the waterfront development was the state-of-the-art bridge linking north pier and south pier - which meant for the first time people could walk all the way around the inner harbour.

The eye-catching bridge now allows boats in and out of the inner harbour and the footpath goes along the top of the bridge, linking south pier with north pier. When the centre section of the bridge is lifted, the metal underwater gates, which hold the water back, go down to allow vessels safe passage. The water in the inner harbour is being kept at mid-tide.
