Step Up for Safety

Back to home

Spencer Group are once again proud to have supported and fully embraced the principles of the ‘Step up for Safety’ event in December 2018. We had a fantastic response from all of our sites including our senior management team leading from the front and ensuring safety is our number one priority going into the festive period.

A special mention goes out to our project management team at Stevenage whose senior leadership team worked collaboratively with their Network Rail colleagues in ensuring the ‘Step up for Safety’ event was a success. Both leadership teams facilitated the group discussion on the project’s risk profile and ensured we are doing everything we can to reduce risk and ensure everyone goes home safe every day. Their project specific ‘Top 5’ risks ensured the sessions were interactive, informative and well received.

All of our project teams contributed to us raising well over 100 close calls during the 3 day event with sites awarding prizes for the best close call submissions.

All of our sites joined in by standing down works to take the time to review recent safety incidents within the industry to see what could have prevented these incidents, who could have prevented these incidents and finally what we as project teams can learn from these. We also dedicated time to focus on our individual project risks, asking ourselves if we are managing the key issues affecting site safety and thinking about what more can be done to make sure everyone goes home safe every day.

Our site teams’ focus and learning was around;

1) Identifying specific tasks in relation to the overall works

2) Risk assessing those tasks and firstly trying to eliminate them

3) Finding practical and safe solutions to manage our risks and ensuring the environment, people and equipment are considered every time

4) The importance of people on site speaking up and sharing concerns about site and task risks

As part of our ‘Step Up for Safety’ event we also asked everyone to sign up to the ‘Step Up for Safety’ commitment pledge. This was an opportunity for all participants to show their commitment and tell us what they will do differently as a result of attending the ‘Step Up for Safety’ event. These will be posted up on all of our sites notice boards to prove our commitment to the ‘Step up for Safety’ pledge.

Thank you to all sites for their excellent participation and all involved working together for a safe site and making our ‘MakeSafe’ culture even better.
